Songs like “Exile on Mainline” represent much of Chemlab’s previous material, however, a new, distinct sound emerged on the album. “East Side Militia” was a completely new approach for Chemlab.

In “21st Century”, the guitar is more involved than in other Chemlab songs and Jared’s vocals are more pronounced. Although most of the album consists of Chemlab songs reborn, the track “21st Century”, is a different sound for Chemlab. “Magnetic Field Remixes”, contained one new track, three remixes from “Burnout at the Hydrogen Bar”, and Chemlab’s first EP “Ten Ton Pressure”. Many of the songs use guitar segments and ADAT’s coupled with Jared’s aggressive vocals and creative lyrics. The fast and biting sound of the album sparked the interest of cold wave fans. “Burnout at the Hydrogen Bar” has been Chemlab’s most successful album to date. Although this EP is now out of print, all of the tracks are on the album, “Magnetic Field Remixes”. “Ten Ton Pressure” got the attention of a core of industrial music fans, and helped pave the way for the group. Jared turned Dylan onto a different, more intense kind of music embodied by older industrial bands like the Throbbing Gristle and Whitehouse.Ĭhemlab’s debut EP, “Ten Ton Pressure”, was a big success considering its relatively poor distribution. The two were introduced at the 9:30 Club in Washington D.C., and soon they started their musical partnership. The technical wizardry of Dylan perfectly matched with Jared’s lyrical savvy.Ĭhemlab got its start when Dylan More was searching for a vocalist and Jared’s name was mentioned. The core members of the original band were Jared Hendrickson and Dylan More.

Originally out of D.C., Chemlab is a very unique band, with a electronic/industrial sound. DeSanto, Steve Watson, Paula “Shark” Wood. Reception Professional ratings Review scoresĪiding & Abetting called East Side Militia laden with "raging beats, accessible tunes and the attitude that is almost unmatched anywhere" and credited it along with the band's debut as "awesome industrial dance albums." Rick Anderson of allmusic praised the band for being forerunners of their genre, saying "the band's 1996 swan song shows them to have been sonically prescient but a bit too nihilistic and vulgar for prime time." Sonic Boom criticized the album's length but commended the personal touches that vocalist Jared Louche brought to the lyrics and said "the music is what one would expect with the band taking so much time between releases, a diverse collection of thickly layered synthcore tracks coupled with a few slower swing style love songs." A critic at Option called the guitar performances by Geno Lenardo of Filter and William Tucker of Ministry brilliant. The song "Jesus Christ Porno Star", a riff on Andrew Lloyd Webber's play of the approximate same name, is an innuendic poke at the Christian religion. The release also leans more towards an electronica and industrial style, with more distortion instrumentally and vocally, including softer melodic parts in the compositions. East Side Militia showcases the bands further progression past the widespread use of metal guitars from the last release.
